GUZMI
Agnosia
Inspired by the book of «The man who mistook his wife for a hat» by Oliver Sacks.
This project aims to show anguish in the face of the incapability to recognize the figurative world.
Oliver Sacks (Neurologist) takes us into the world of a man who suffers from agnosia. A condition that affects the visual recognition part of the brain of humans.
The individual in this story is able to perceive abstract forms and recognize his surroundings by their sounds or a particular attribute which they feature. He does not seem to realize that something is wrong with him. He is living in his own world and for him it has always been that way –although the disease only started developing when he grew older-. He does not seem to see the world as a whole, but rather as pieces of a puzzle and details that are a part of the bigger picture.
The impossibility of realization, of perceiving the world in another way, moves towards the impossibility of knowing what this individual is actually seeing. For me this is troubling and intriguing. It enticed me to experiment with image to present an abstract world.
